Person Specification
• Degree in music or equivalent professional experience
• Proven experience conducting symphony orchestras
• Deep knowledge of orchestral repertoire and ability to programme concerts tailored to player capability and audience appeal
• Collaborative and strategic mindset to help shape the orchestra’s future direction
• Strong network of musical contacts for collaborations and guest appearances
• Ability to motivate and inspire amateur players across all sections
• Excellent communication skills with musicians and audiences alike
• Broad experience across diverse orchestral styles and genres
• Sociable and inclusive, appreciating the orchestra’s vibrant social culture
• Understanding of charity funding and willingness to support grants and financial sustainability
• A commitment to amateur music-making, lifelong musical learning, and public access to the arts
Key Responsibilities
• Lead weekly rehearsals on Tuesday evenings (19:15–21:30, including during school half-term holidays) and additional rehearsals in concert weeks as required.
• Conduct 3–4 concerts per year, including concert-day rehearsals
• Provide a suitable deputy if unable to attend a rehearsal
• Work with the committee and section principals to trial and approve new players
• Collaborate with the committee on long-term strategy and musical direction
• Support the treasurer in identifying and applying for grants
• Help publicise and promote concerts and outreach events
• Maintain regular communication with the committee and orchestra members
• Actively engage with concert audiences to enhance their experience
• Support the orchestra’s charitable objectives through inclusive programming and community-facing activities, in line with its constitution
Remuneration
• Rehearsals: £80–£100 per session
• Concerts (including day rehearsal): £250–£400
Fees inclusive of all preparation and expenses.

Selection Process
Shortlisted applicants will be contacted by 28th September 2025 and invited to an online interview. Final candidates will audition by conducting the orchestra on either 6th or 13th January 2026 (a third date may be added). Repertoire will be shared in advance. A follow-up interview may also be arranged online or in person.
