Introduction to PRSSV
PRSSV www.prssv.org is an established arts educational charity with over 30 years’ experience of promoting world music heritage through regular workshops, accredited training, events, exhibitions, and a digital archive. Our work focuses on preserving, understanding, and broadening access to the musical heritage of UK’s BAME communities – with a special focus on South Asian, African, and Caribbean traditions. This diverse heritage is steeped in oral traditions and is central to the cultural identity of its communities.

Background to project:
This project will contribute to the sustainability of world music heritage, enabling it to evolve and thrive as part of our country’s unique cultural diversity from a position of respect and knowledge.

By building on our record as a heritage and teaching skills provider, we seek to establish a unique accredited trainee programme to develop the skills of musicians of World Music for them to access new employment opportunities.

This project will enable us to run a year- long pilot programme in partnership with four London Music Hubs in Harrow, Hillingdon, Newham and Waltham Forest. We will be recruiting 8 skilled musicians from musical traditions rooted in South Asia, Africa and/or the Caribbean. Trainees will develop new skills; gain qualifications and on-the-job experiences to promote their specialist area of world music expertise through the lens of heritage.

This project has the support of four London music hubs who will provide professional support and school placements for trainees.

The Role:
•This structured training programme will provide you with an opportunity to develop the required skills for teaching and promoting your instrument and its associated heritage in schools and the community.
• It will help you to engage school children and community groups with your instrument through the lens of heritage, providing a holistic experience in both formal and informal settings.
• The programme will last two days a week of which you will spend one day in a school and the other day receiving heritage skills and teacher training. You will also be required to present a community-based workshop and/or event.

Your training will include:
• Instruction in research, digital archiving, webinars, marketing and workshop delivery in schools and community settings for a wide range of participants.
• Supervised work in a school both in the classroom and with small groups.
•Regular teacher training workshops and assessments
• Support by a mentor and your colleagues

The training programme will lead to an OCN Credit4Learning recognised vocational qualification, the Level 4 Teacher Competences certificate. This qualification is competence-based; candidates must demonstrate the level of competence described in the units. Assessment is summative and final assessment is by production of a personal portfolio.

The Person:
The successful candidate will have the following:
• Be an experienced player of a recognised World Music instrument for example - Steel Pan, Veena, Tabla, Sitar, Mridangam, Djembe etc.
• Be prepared to work for the accredited PRSSV Level 3 performance (grades 6,7, or 8).
• Good communication skills with an ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Team working skills - able to work well within a team and support/respect other team members and to develop good working relationships.
