About our group

Surrey Brass is a symphonic brass group based in Fetcham, Surrey, rehearsing on Wednesday evenings.  Primarily operating as a ten-piece ensemble, but with the ability to increase to larger forces, we play a wide range of music from classical to big band, film music to popular arrangements.  Our group aims to perform four to five concerts a year across Surrey and beyond.

Overview

Surrey Brass is seeking a dedicated and talented Musical Director to lead and inspire our group. The ideal candidate would have a background in brass music, but more important are strong leadership skills coupled with a passion for fostering musical excellence.

Responsibilities

• Conducting: Lead rehearsals and performances, ensuring a high standard of musical interpretation and performance quality.
• Rehearsal Planning: Develop and implement effective rehearsal schedules and plans that maximise productivity and musical development.
• Repertoire Selection: work with the committee to select appropriate and diverse pieces of music that challenge and engage the ensemble members, while also appealing to our audience.
• Musical Development: Provide constructive feedback and guidance to musicians, helping them improve their skills and performance.

Key skills and attributes

• Excellent musicality and the ability to shape high quality music making
• Energy and leadership: Ability to inspire, motivate, and lead the group’s musicians
• Experience as a conductor or musical director with excellent conducting and rehearsal techniques
• Personality and presence with the ability to interact with audiences
• Organisational Skills: Strong organisational and time-management abilities to effectively plan and execute rehearsals and performances.
• A brass playing background is an advantage but not essential
• An interest in composing and/or arranging new music for the group would be beneficial
