Musical Director/Conductor

Application deadline:
Friday, 12 January 2024
Description of vacancy:

Tynemouth Choral Society is seeking a new musical director/conductor from summer 2024.  Our profile as a leading choir in the north-east has been strengthened under the 8-year stewardship of our current director, Peter Coulson.  As a choral society our repertoire is primarily focussed on sacred and classical music, but we also perform more modern pieces (for example, the main work in our spring 2023 concert was Poulenc’s Gloria), and lighter operatic choruses and seasonal songs.

The choir has approximately 40 members, and meets for rehearsal every Monday evening in Whitley Bay.  Our excellent accompanist has been associated with the choir for over 15 years.  Our current calendar involves presenting four concerts per year: in November (usually accompanied by a small orchestra); a carol concert in December; one concert just before Easter; and a more informal summer concert.  In addition, we run a ‘Come and Sing’ day in mid-February to encourage local participation and potential members.  We are a non-audition choir, whose major aim is to give members the opportunity to enjoy rehearsing and performing standard, along with more challenging, works.

We ask for expressions of interest in this position, which is remunerated with a standard honorarium, before the end of December 2023.  Selected candidates will be asked to lead a segment of one of our regular rehearsals at a suitable time sometime in early 2024.

Any further enquiries and formal application of interest can be directed towards the Secretary of the Tynemouth Choral Society, Stephen Grant (gill.and.steve@blueyonder.co.uk).
