Wimbledon Choral seeks its next Music Director

Application deadline:
Thursday, 29 February 2024
Description of vacancy:

After 15 highly successful years, Neil Ferris is standing down as Music Director of Wimbledon Choral in June 2024. It has been, and remains, a very fruitful and happy relationship for both parties but now is the time for him to create some space for the next page in his illustrious career. We are, therefore, looking for a new Music Director to lead our friendly and successful choir, to take us into fresh music realms, encourage continuing development of our vocal quality and to bring us to new heights of performance, including new commissions and recordings.

Wimbledon Choral is an auditioned amateur choir of over 180 members based in south-west London. We perform in major venues in and around London, from the Cadogan Hall to Southwark Cathedral, from the Royal Festival Hall to the Royal Albert Hall, and in more local venues including Wimbledon and Southfields. Overseas tours in recent years have included to Rome and Tallinn.

We present four main concerts in each season including our annual Christmas concert, occasional workshops and other music activities. We are sometimes invited to join with other choirs in joint ventures, most recently supporting the Bach Choir and three other choirs at the Royal Albert Hall in a performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.

Rehearsals take place on Monday evenings between 7.30-9.45pm in the centre of Wimbledon (with excellent rail, Tube and bus connections) and our rehearsing and performing season runs from September to June.

Please visit www.wimbledon-choral.org.uk/newmd to download a pack containing further details on the choir, together with details of the recruitment and appointment process, and a description of the qualities which we will be looking for in our new Music Director.

You will need vision, drive, passion, commitment as well as previous experience in working with a large chorus and professional musicians to achieve consistently high standards of performance.

Applications should be received by midnight on 29 February 2024 and we expect to make a decision no later than July 2024, after undertaking interviews and auditions.

If you have any queries on this or the process described in the pack then please contact the choir’s Hon. Secretary, Tracy Sherman, on newmd@wimbledon-choral.org.uk.
