As part of Making Music’s 90th anniversary celebrations, we’re speaking to some of our long-standing member groups about their history, their impact, and their hopes for the future.
One such group is Barnet Band; a thriving community wind band with a rich past and a forward-looking spirit. We spoke to Sue Dunn, the band’s Secretary, and Ian Merryweather, its Chair, both of whom have been involved since the early 1990s.
Making Music is the UK membership organisation for leisure-time music and is overseen by a board of nine trustees, who are elected by member groups of Making Music – and up to three more can be co-opted. This year at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 2 July, we announced four board members; three of which are new and one re-elected.

Barbara Eifler, Chief Executive of Making Music, recently attended Beyond 2025, the annual conference of Culture Action Europe (CAE), a lobbying umbrella body in Europe, in her capacity as a Board member of Amateo, the European Network promoting and advocating for participatory arts and culture – formed of many organisations and networks just like Making Music.

The choir celebrated a hugely fun and successful first year of activity with an energetic gospel workshop on 28 February 2025, ran by the highly enthusiastic singer, Musical Director and workshop leader, Elaine Simpson. The workshop capped off a wonderful first year which saw the choir attend their first choir festival, host their first Christmas concert and perform at local events in their hometown, Letchworth Garden City.
