Musical Director

Headington Singers is seeking a new Musical Director from September 2025 to take over from our current Director who is retiring in July 2025 after almost thirty years in post.

Headington Singers is a non-auditioning, community choir, based in Oxford with members drawn from the city and surrounding areas. Numbers singing varies slightly from term to term; occasionally, for very popular works we have applied a cap of 80. Rehearsals are held between 7.30pm and 9.15pm on Tuesday school term-time evenings in All Saints’ Church, Lime Walk, Headington. The church is also our regular concert venue.

Concerts are given three times a year, at the end of each school term with a dress rehearsal on a Thursday evening and the concert on the following Friday. Our repertoire is mainly the choral classics with regular forays into other genres and the occasional commission. Repertoire is chosen by the Musical Director in consultation with choir committees. Accompaniment for concerts is dependent on the music being sung and budgetary constraints, varying from full orchestra to piano or organ.

The successful applicant will need to be an experienced conductor capable of achieving high standards while working with a mixed ability choir. They will need to work effectively with our accompanist, Maureen Cooper and have a good knowledge of vocal technique and suitable repertoire. Orchestral experience is essential and knowledge of potentially available soloists and instrumentalists would be an advantage.

Remuneration to be agreed in consultation with the successful applicant.

We hope to hold interviews for short-listed applicants in June after they have had the opportunity to take part of a rehearsal beforehand.
