The South Somerset Music Centre are thrilled to be hosting their first opera! Join singers from across the South West for a performance of Handel’s ‘The Choice of Hercules’ with Jonathan Delbridge, harpsichord, and David Ellery, cello. Telling of the temptation of Hercules, watch as the legendary Greek is enticed by the enchanting Pleasure, and settled as Virtue reigns supreme.
Welsh baritone Matthew Tilley will perform as Hercules, having previously performed roles in operas including Mozart’s ‘The Marriage of Figaro, Puccini’s ‘La Boheme’ and Puccini’s ‘Tosca’. Soprano Maisie Lewis will perform the role of Pleasure. Maisie’s previous performances include Handel’s ‘Acis and Galatea’, and as soloist in works including Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’ and Pergolesi’s ‘Stabat Mater’. The role of Virtue will be performed by mezzo-soprano Molly Jasmine Soo, an in-demand soloist, who’s recent performances include Rossini’s ‘Petite Messe Sollenelle,’ Handel’s ‘Messiah’ and Purcell’s ‘Come ye sons of arts.’
Join these three soloists and a chorus of singers and musicians from the South West for a lighthearted night of opera.
There will be a free of charge, pre-concert talk from 6.30pm by Dr Francis Burroughes exploring `Handel’s contribution to opera and giving more information on “The Choice of Hercules”.
